February 2010 Welcomed Union Grove
Lake Watershed Coordinator Melody Bro, who reported on current
developments in the watershed. Pledged a letter of commitment for a DNR
Watershed Planning Grant application.
Reviewed average costs of conservation practices, leaving all the
rates the same as 2009.
Approved support for the annual High School Envirothon competition.
Made plans to attend the Spring Regional meeting March 16 in
Knoxville. Reviewed information on the State Employees Retirement
Incentive Program. |
| March 2010 Attended CDI Regional Meeting in
Knoxville. Selected Seth Appelgate and Kody Sjoblom as our 2010
scholarship winners. Seth's application was sent to the
Regional competition. Designated persons to be authorized to sign on
the checking account. Learned that our Secretary, Sigourney Odor,
plans to retire at the end of May. Published the 2009 Annual Report in
the newsletter. |
April 2010 Division of Soil
Conservation Field Rep Paul Valin talked about the impact of the State
Employees Retirement Incentive Program on staffing in the 100 soil
conservation districts in Iowa. Each vacancy created by a
retirement is handled on a case-by-case basis. Claudia Dalbey,
secretary in Story County, will cover Marshall County.
Commissioners and staff will work together to determine priorities for
secretarial support. Scheduled the annual audit of the district bank
accounts, to be completed by Assistant Commissioners Don Buck and Jim
White. Selected winners in the 2010 poster contest for the top two age
divisions. There were no entries from grades K-8. Approved a
donation to Iowa's Water and Land Legacy project. |
| May 2010 Learned that the Iowa's Water and
Land Legacy project is not allowed to accept donations from government
entities. Our contribution was returned to us. Prepared
nomination forms to be made available to persons interested in being
elected to the office of Soil and Water Conservation District. Two
vacancies will appear on the General Election ballot in November.
Selected nominees for the award categories of Conservation Farmer of the
Year and Farmstead Windbreak. Approved a donation to the Marshalltown
High School Envirothon team, who will be participating in the National
competition in Fresno, California. Kevin Holl volunteered to keep the
website up to date after Sigourney's retirement. Approved the
purchase of software to be used on his computer. Celebrated Sigourney
Odor's retirement with an Open House luncheon at the office on May 26. |
